Smoky Quartz is found across the globe, including Australia, Africa, USA and Brazil . It has a Mohs hardness factor of 7 and a vitreous lustre. It is proudly the national gem of Scotland and used in the highlands for brooches and kilt pins. Dating back to the times of the ancient Druids and Celts, smoky quartz has been used in ceremonies and rituals, and even placed in the handles of swords and other weapons as a power stone. It was believed to represent the earth gods and used to accompany souls to the afterlife. On the other side of the globe the 12th century Chinese were also utilising smoky quartz but for a very different purpose. They used thin, smooth sections of this translucent stone to protect their eyes much like our modern day sunglasses.
